Wednesday was a positive day for us.
We meet with a new social worker from FCCS regarding our situation and the options that we have with Kole. We have case plan meeting for mid June. It seems like we are going to benefit from their help.
We also met with Kole's psychiatrist. We see him about every two months. I had called about a month ago and asked if he could refer us for a neurological exam and he thought he didn't need one. I became fairly discouraged and disappointed as I didn't understand why he would offer us the opportunity. When we were in front of him yesterday I breached the subject again and he told us again that he didn't think it was necessary and didn't think that there was anything neurological going on BUT he would write the referral. Which is HUGE. I respect his opinions and thoughts but as a mother of a child that struggles my goal is to rule out EVERYTHING that I can. He will undergo a full nuero psychological.
We also asked about Asbergers and Autism testing. He again didn't think that was the issue and informed us that even if we were diagnosed that the treatment that he would offer would be the same as what we are doing now. He did offer the referral to Children's which will take anywhere from 6 to 8 months to get in.
We have started a new med for anger/rage/impulsively. If it helps we should notice some changes in about 1 to 2 weeks.
The Dr. weighed him and he had lost 9 pounds since his last visit. Sean said my eyes popped out of my head like a cartoon character when I heard that. We discussed it being the meds and I informed him of the testing that the pediatrician is doing as well.
We are also starting him on a gluten free diet. I am still learning and I have recently purchased a couple of books from Amazon that I am waiting on. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. That protein can often cause a diverse reaction in children and be the cause for severe behavioral issues. It is extreme. It will be a huge adjustment for us both but I am committed to trying it for at least 6 months to see if it makes a positive change. It is something that I have thrown around for quite sometime but hadn't taken the steps until a girlfriend (SARAH!! THANK YOU!!) gave me the swift kick in the butt that I needed to do so! We went to Trader Joe's yesterday and did a little research and shopping. We found some special candies, cookies and mixes just for Kole.
School is out next week and I am beginning to worry how I am going to handle all 4 all day long day in and day out. I am working on building a "libray/park schedule" and a "craft schedule" for each week to keep us entertained.
